This Santa Cruz-based artist started her career as a marine biologist, constantly working on creative projects on the side. Taking a leap to pursue art full time, this self-taught painter combined her love of the ocean with her unique, personal style to create artwork inspired by the California coast.
Having spent years living on (and in) the ocean, even Caryn’s most abstract work is influenced by her seaside surroundings and its colors.

“Really it started when I had kids, and I painted with them. I found that with having little kids and a full-time job, painting was really relaxing and a really good outlet for me.”
“My creative process always starts with colors. I go to my studio, set all of my canvases out that I’m working on, and then I pull the colors out that I want and start mixing on the palette and go from there. I’ll usually have a couple of canvases going at once because if I really like a color I’ve just created, I want to use it a lot.”
