About the work

This mixed media artwork features a painterly rendering of California and the Pacific Ocean. Named after lyrics from "I Love You, California," the state song, the piece features a vibrant ocean with energetic, bright marks and a textured landscape reminiscent of the layered qualities of serpentine, the state rock. Underneath these layers, pinkish hints of a red wash appear, a subtle nod to the red of the state flag, used to symbolize courage.
