There is a part of my brain that savors mathematics and science and this often inspires me to include elements in my work that honor that. In this particular painting, the inspiration started with the name. The lunar phases (in this case "waning gibbous") are easy. The portion of the lighthouse shown (one quarter) is less apparent. Those familiar with my work would recognize this as the Point Montara lighthouse in California. Point Montara is also a hostel for the keepers there. It serves as their quarters.

    about the artist

    byRobert Deem

    Windsor, CA

A gallery owner once told me, "Paint what you love and not what you think people will buy and they will be drawn to your work." Since then I have tried to follow his advice. At the same time I realized that what attracts me to other artists' work is the love and care that I see in it. I live and paint in Pfafftown, North Carolina and in Windsor, California spending about half the year in each. I do portraiture, pen and ink, but mostly oil on canvas.
