About the work

A sprig of dried oak leaves, drawn from life. The style is inspired by John Ruskin’s late 19th century leaf studies and his close observations of nature. I love the contrast of tightly-rendered, realistic details, and loose, unfinished sketched edges. The color palette takes cues from the depth and variety of color that can be seen in a subject that might, at first glance, appear monotone.
