About the work

Mogno is the small village in the Maggia Valley, Switzerland where this beautiful church called Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista (Church of St John the Baptist), designed by Mario Botta, is located. The innovative building is built from alternating layers of native Peccia marble and Vallemaggia granite. It has no window and the interior is only illuminated by natural light streaming in through the glass roof. The building creates a wonderful rhythm of black and white, of light and shadow.
