When I created this painting I wanted a memento that reminded me of both my father and of his father. Both loved music. My dad sang in the symphony chorale and was the symphony's treasurer. My grandfather was a romantic and played standards from the 30's and 40's on his violin. This painting was inspired by these two men who inspired me to do something in my life that I love to do. The original painting hangs in the Winston-Salem Symphony office where my dad served for many years.

    about the artist

    byRobert Deem

    Windsor, CA

A gallery owner once told me, "Paint what you love and not what you think people will buy and they will be drawn to your work." Since then I have tried to follow his advice. At the same time I realized that what attracts me to other artists' work is the love and care that I see in it. I live and paint in Pfafftown, North Carolina and in Windsor, California spending about half the year in each. I do portraiture, pen and ink, but mostly oil on canvas.
