This abstract acrylic painting takes a modern spin on landscape art. The bright orange in this expressionist seascape was inspired by the bright orange lava erupting from the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii. The blues in this piece were inspired by the deep hues of the surrounding Pacific Ocean.

Caryn Owen created abstract paintings while simultaneously balancing motherhood and a career as a marine biology professor for years. In 2014, she left marine biology behind to predominately focus on art. Using acrylic paint on canvas, Caryn creates abstract landscapes, abstract botanicals, or pure abstract expressionist paintings focusing primarily on color rather than form in her studio in Santa Cruz, California.
