This charcoal drawing explores the power and movement of a grand cloudscape. By building up the sculptural forms of the clouds using an additive and subtractive technique, a dramatic and semi-abstract composition is created. I find endless inspiration in the beauty of nature and hope to convey that sense of wonder in my work.

    about the artist

    byKelly Johnston

    Bainbridge Island, WA

The waters and skies surrounding my home on Bainbridge Island, Washington provide me with endless inspiration for my landscape-based paintings. My work combines bold color and loosely applied paint to emulate the poetic interaction of sunlight on the water’s surface as well as the abstract qualities of clouds and sky. Working with water soluble oils or gouache, I use fluid brushstrokes to evoke sunlit spaces and to highlight the organic patterns I find repeated in nature.
