Spring Comes to the Hills is a mixed media landscape drawing created with pencil, pastels, and charcoal. I began this piece with a blank sheet of paper and some drawing materials, but not much of a plan. After applying a few marks to paper, I decided to play with an imaginary location. As each color was applied, I could feel my yearning for spring expressing itself, playing across the rolling hills.

    about the artist

    byKaren Kaul

    Hanover, MN

My work is driven by a study in contrasts: light and dark, refined and rustic, serene and chaotic. Contrast creates dynamic tension—the ultimate playground for any artist. Orchestrating the balance between opposites is where life and art become interesting to me. I currently reside near Minneapolis on two unruly acres with my husband, two teenage boys, and our pets.
