I am drawn to flowers as they provide endless metaphors for the human experience. Parrot Tulips get more beautiful and complex as they age, their heads becoming droopy and the petals spreading and dropping. The interplay of stem and petal creates the most intricate shapes and layers. Finding the edges was a delightful challenge as I tried to capture the feel of these beautiful flowers. Black paint allowed me to focus on the lines to create a graphic statement.

    about the artist

Putting a brush to a canvas slows time down for me so I notice subtleties - texture on a petal, a swipe of ripening pigment on a pear, light filtering through a child's skirt - in ways that I entirely miss when I'm running around doing my normal busy routine. Painting is how I pay attention to and process the beauty and complexity of the world (and people) around me.
