This mixed media piece is part of my "Essential Garden" series that came about when we were planting our wilderness garden from scratch on a barren rooftop. I started with papercuts of organic forms and drawings inspired by weeds, seedpods and succulents. I then monoprinted my papercuts producing lots of "distressed" textures – aiming to reflect how there can be beauty in roughness. The series describes the circle of a garden year – from seed to treasuring and caring to bloom, with passion all woven through.

I am a graphic designer originally, but in 2011 I decided to spend more time away from the computer, which led me back to my first love, painting! Which then led to surface design, and then illustration. And it set my life on a different path … nowadays I work from my small but cozy home studio in the beautiful Lahn River Valley. I love to sketch and paint outdoors and I call our rooftop garden and the valley itself my second and third workplace.
