Cozy Pom-Pom Garland

By Olivia Kanaley, DIY Editor

As the temperatures start to drop this month, projects involving a cozy bundle of yarn start to sound like just the ticket. Even if you don’t knit or crochet, you can still get in on the fun. Make this easy pom-pom garland in an afternoon and enjoy it all winter long.

Let’s get started with supplies…

For this project you’ll need: yarn (see tips below), a sharp pair of scissors, string and a yarn or tapestry needle (you can find them at craft, fabric or yarn stores).

Step 1: Wrap a generous amount of yarn around your fingers as shown to create a small bundle.

Step 2: Slide the yarn off your hand and knot a piece of string tightly around the center of the bundle. Trim the ends of the string.

Step 3: Snip the loops on each end of the yarn bundle.

Step 4: Fluff out the pom pom and carefully trim the edges to give it shape.

Step 5: Repeat Steps 1-5 until you have enough to make a garland (amount will vary depending on the spacing you choose). Using a yarn needle, thread each pom pom onto a length of yarn to create a garland. When stringing the pom poms, be sure to pierce straight through the center so they are firmly secured.

Step 6: Enjoy your finished garland! Festoon a doorway, mantel or tree.

Tips for the perfect pom-pom:

• Choosing thick yarn is the ultimate shortcut to a full and fluffy pom-pom. Look for yarns labeled bulky or super bulky. Yarns labeled “roving yarn” are also a great choice. We used this merino wool yarn.

• Use a generous amount of yarn.

• Trim, trim trim. When you first fluff the pom pom it won’t look perfect, but a little trimming will help create a full and dense look.

I can’t wait to make these! Where did you get the gold sequin ribbon?

    • oliviakanaley

Hi there! You can usually find sequin trim at fabric stores, however craft stores often carry it as well — I found the trim I used here sold by the spool at Michaels. If you’d rather order online you can find a huge selection from sellers on Etsy.

      Hope this helps!
