Hi Maya. Your illustrations are very charming! For future competitions, I would focus on simplifying your type. Sydney Newsom has a good post on the Minted forum re: typography. Also, you might want to explore alternative color palettes. Kuler.adobe.com is a great source for this. As far as integrating into the community, the best way is to just start commenting on designs that you like and voting as much as you possibly can. Good luck!
