The design is part of the larger Nature of America Sonoran Desert pane, which uses a panoramic acrylic painting by John Dawson to showcase the region’s plants, animals, and habitat relationships. First issued on April 6, 1999, in Tucson, Arizona, this stamp helped launch the Nature of America series, a USPS series created to celebrate major North American ecological communities.
