First issued on April 6, 1999, in Tucson, Arizona, this stamp was part of the first issue in the Nature of America series, a USPS series created to promote appreciation of major North American ecological communities.

The artwork was created by John Dawson, and the stamps were printed by Banknote Corporation of America using offset printing.
