STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1993 29-cent Tulip stamp features a colorful botanical illustration of tulips in warm red and yellow tones, with green stems and foliage forming part of the larger Spring Garden Flowers se-tenant booklet design. Issued as part of the Garden Flowers series, this stamp belonged to a group of five spring-blooming flowers that included hyacinth, daffodil, tulip, iris, and lilac. The Spring Garden Flowers booklet was first issued on May 15, 1993, in Spokane, Washington, and was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using lithographed and engraved production.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Tulips are spring-blooming perennial bulb flowers in the genus Tulipa, known for their upright stems, broad green leaves, and large cup- or star-shaped blooms. They appear in many vivid colors, including red, yellow, pink, orange, purple, and white, often with contrasting markings near the base of the petals. Tulips are native across a broad region stretching from southern Europe through Turkey, the Levant, Central Asia, and into parts of western China. They thrive in temperate climates with cool springs and dry summers, and are commonly associated with gardens, meadows, steppes, and cultivated spring landscapes.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Tulips are often associated with renewal, grace, affection, and the joyful return of spring. Their clean, elegant shape and vivid seasonal color make them a meaningful symbol of fresh beginnings, cheerful devotion, and heartfelt correspondence. On vintage postage, the tulip brings a polished floral accent to mailings that celebrate love, gratitude, new life, and the beauty of the changing seasons.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Spring Garden Flowers stamps were issued as a seasonal botanical booklet featuring five favorite garden flowers: hyacinth, daffodil, tulip, iris, and lilac. The stamps were first issued on May 15, 1993, in Spokane, Washington. The issue was art directed by Derry Noyes, with floral artwork by Ned M. Seidler. This spring-themed booklet became part of the broader Garden Flowers stamp program, which celebrated familiar blooms from different seasons of the year.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
