Issued as part of the five-stamp Summer Garden Flowers booklet, this design was one of the “bright, pretty American stamps” the USPS hoped customers would enjoy using on everyday mail. The stamp paid the then-current 29-cent first-class postage rate and was first issued on April 28, 1994, in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio, Flower and Garden Show. The stamp was designed by artist Ned Seidler and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Zinnias are easy-to-grow garden flowers admired for their brilliant blossoms, long blooming season, and wide range of colors. They are native to the southwestern United States and to Central and South America, and they are also cultivated in Europe and other temperate growing regions. A zinnia blossom is made up of two types of flowers: tiny tube-shaped disk flowers in the center and petal-like ray flowers around the outside. Zinnias are commonly seen in red, yellow, orange, pink, apricot, cream, violet, and even green, with some varieties appearing multicolored or striped.

First issued on April 28, 1994, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Summer Garden Flowers set featured lily, zinnia, gladiolus, marigold, and rose designs arranged as a connected bouquet. The series was created to offer bright floral stamps with strong public appeal for everyday mailing use. The booklet was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using lithographed and engraved methods, and the artwork was designed by artist Ned Seidler.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces.
