STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1994 Rose stamp features a bright yellow rose bloom accented by surrounding pink blossoms and green foliage, creating a lively summer bouquet effect. Designed as part of the Summer Garden Flowers booklet, the stamp was intended to be one of the “bright, pretty American stamps” the USPS hoped would appeal to everyday mailers while also paying the then-current 29-cent first-class rate. The stamp was issued on April 28, 1994, in Cincinnati, Ohio, as part of the five-stamp summer booklet in the larger Garden Flowers series.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Roses are flowering shrubs long admired for their layered petals, sweet fragrance, and wide range of colors. They are believed to have originated in central Asia and eventually spread throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, where wild roses have grown in climates ranging from cold northern regions to warm temperate areas. Roses have been cultivated for centuries and remain one of the world’s most recognized and beloved flowers, valued for their beauty, symbolism, and strong association with love and celebration.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Roses often symbolize love, devotion, beauty, gratitude, and heartfelt emotion. Their timeless appeal makes this stamp especially fitting for romantic correspondence, wedding mail, anniversary cards, and thoughtful personal notes. The warm yellow rose imagery also brings a sense of friendship, joy, and affection, making this a beautiful stamp for both celebratory and meaningful everyday mail.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Summer Garden Flowers booklet was the second seasonal installment in the Garden Flowers series. First issued on April 28, 1994, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the booklet featured five vertical se-tenant flower stamps representing summer blooms. The series grew out of USPS interest in offering bright floral stamps with broad public appeal, following the popularity of the earlier Wildflowers issue and the 1993 Spring Garden Flowers booklet. The Summer Garden Flowers stamps were printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using lithographed and engraved methods, and the stamp artwork was designed by artist Ned Seidler.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
