This collage is one of a series made with attention to color and texture. The artist uses sume paper that is painted with gouache paint, sometimes ink or pencil is used, and occasionally handwriting.
This particular piece is a study of Winter colors in upstate N.Y. The reds are exaggerated and are meant to convey the bare trees as seen in early morning. Once the papers are cut and assembled they are fused together with a hot iron.
