My mother was an avid vegetable gardener, but she didn’t have much of a green thumb when it came to flowers. Her favorite flowers she successfully grew were Hens and Chicks. I remember her telling me the story of why they had such an unusual name. The plant grows a long cylindrical stem with a round ball shaped flower on the end which resembles a hen. When it sprouts new plants, they grow underneath, poking out from under the mother plant resembling baby chicks. Now, I enjoy growing my own, occasionally photographing them. It brings back fond memories of my mom.
