Christmas Craft:
Mini Christmas Tree Planter

Dress up tabletop Christmas trees by displaying them in these fabric-covered planters.

Fabric-Covered Christmas Tree Box

I love creating holiday decorations that can also be used long after Christmas is over, which is exactly the case with this DIY project. During the holidays, display festive tabletop Christmas trees in these patterned-fabric boxes, then re-purpose them later as storage containers for all your random odds and ends.

SUPPLIES

  • 6-inch potted trees (the ones featured here are lemon cypress)
  • 6″ x 6″ cardboard boxes
  • Your favorite Minted fabrics
  • Mod Podge
  • Scissors
  • Sponge brush
  • Ruler

STEP ONE

Cut off the tops of box.

STEP TWO

To make a “plus sign”-shaped piece of fabric, place the box in the center of the fabric, then measure 8 inches from the edge of box on all four sides.

STEP THREE

Next, add one extra inch to all four sides (making the plus-sign shape one inch larger on all sides), then cut the fabric to this size.

STEP FOUR

Using a sponge brush, apply Mod Podge to one side of the box. Fold in the fabric as you would with giftwrap: Pull the fabric up and affix it to the box, smoothing out any bubbles. Fold the excess fabric over the box rim; apply Mod Podge to the inside of the box and affix fabric.

STEP FIVE

At the base of the box, cut a small slit on both corners of the fabric, almost to the box (this will allow you to fold the fabric over and make a clean edge).

STEP SIX

Apply Mod Podge to next box side, then take the extra allowance of fabric around the side of the box, creating a nice, clean corner. Next, pull the length of fabric up and smooth out.

STEP SEVEN

Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the remaining sides.

STEP EIGHT

On the final side, make sure to fold down both edges to create nice, clean edges before you affix the fabric to the box side.

STEP NINE

Apply Mod Podge to the fabric folded over the inside of the box to make sure the fabric is secure. Let dry for a few hours.

STEP TEN

Slide in your tree and you have yourself a perfect holiday decoration!
