I love working with vintage and found materials and adding layers of color and paint to create original compositions. The California Poppy is one of my favorite flowers. To create my pieces, I start with accumulated and collected paper: postcards from family and friends, envelopes, sketchbook pages, my daughter’s doodles, old wallpaper and photographs, hand-painted papers, and stickers. I piece the papers together following colors, forms, and shapes. There is often the suggestion of topography and water, botanical forms, and big curves of space.

    about the artist

    byErin McCluskey Wheeler

    Richmond, CA

I work in collage + paint and approach painting with a textile designers eye for color and texture. I use found photographs, bits of older paintings and prints, and layers of gouache, watercolor, and acrylic. I come from a family of quilt makers and my work, like quilting, is full of vivid colors, strong contrasting color combinations, rectangular piecework, reused old material, and line work. I work intuitively and find inspiration in both street art and botanical forms.
