Driving through North Dakota is surprisingly beautiful. The rolling ranch land and sunflower fields suddenly give way to the ruggedness of the Badlands. I took this photograph overlooking the Painted Canyon on my way to Montana, captivated by the coral and grey tones of the sedimentary layers of the soil, eroded by wind and water — the tough vegetation eking out a steadfast existence.
