About the work

This mixed-media artwork features a painterly rendition of the state of Maryland. Here, brushstrokes of opaque paint combine with fluid washes in bold colors to form a work suggestive of the symbols unique to the state. The subtly textured background is rendered in lighter tints of a red orange hue, referencing the layered colors of Patuxent River stone, the state gem, and the orange of the Baltimore oriole, the state bird. Set against this backdrop are the state, rendered in light tints of olive green, along with the winding waters of the Chesapeake Bay, in teal blue, which together represent the colors of the blue crab, the state crustacean.
