STAMP HISTORY: This 41c Snowman postage stamp, part of the “Holiday Knits” set, was a Contemporary Christmas issue released on October 25, 2007, in New York, New York, as part of a set of four stamps. Inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and Christmas stockings, this cozy stamp features a cheerful blue snowman with a top hat, designed to look like a machine-knitted winter pattern.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The 2007 “Holiday Knits” Snowman postage stamp, like the snowman it depicts, symbolizes themes of joy, childhood innocence, warmth, and resilience. Its cultural significance lies in its connection to traditional holiday imagery and the nostalgic comfort of handmade crafts, while its spiritual meaning can be interpreted in relation to purity, rebirth, and divine care. Snowmen have been associated with the cheerful spirit of winter holidays for centuries, representing the joy and wonder of childhood memories, building with friends, and the hope for a "white Christmas". The stamp's knitted design, inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and Christmas stockings, was intentionally created to feel "cozy" and add a touch of warmth to seasonal correspondence sent to friends and family. The image of a simple, perky snowman connects with the history of winter celebrations and the popularization of the snowman as a holiday icon through stories and songs like "Frosty the Snowman".
SERIES HISTORY: The 2007 “Holiday Knits” stamps are part of the United States Postal Service's (USPS) annual series of contemporary holiday-themed postage stamps. The se-tenant set of four classic wintertime images — a stag, an evergreen tree, a snowman, and a teddy bear — was designed by nationally known illustrator Nancy Stahl. Inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and Christmas stockings, Stahl used a computer program to create the designs, converted the images to stitches, and then used a knitting machine to make the actual pieces, which were then photographed for the final stamp designs. The stamps made their debut at a first-day-of-issue ceremony on Thursday, October 25, at the 2007 American Stamp Dealers Association's Postage Stamp Mega-Event at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
