I love road trips, mainly because I rarely have to drive and get to spend the time looking out the windows and watching the world in all its rich beauty fly by. Nothing stays the same for long: the sky, the plants, the horizon - so I take pictures to help me remember, and use them as prompts for my memory when I return to my studio and try and process all that looking with my oil paints. This piece is my capture of the vista from the passenger seat on a long summer road trip from California to Oregon. The painting has a companion piece, Road Trip 2.

    about the artist

    byLynne Millar

    Tracy, CA

Putting a brush to a canvas slows time down for me so I notice subtleties - texture on a petal, a swipe of ripening pigment on a pear, light filtering through a child's skirt - in ways that I entirely miss when I'm running around doing my normal busy routine. Painting is how I pay attention to and process the beauty and complexity of the world (and people) around me.
