STAMP HISTORY: The 1978 16¢ “Statue of Liberty” postage stamp was issued by the U.S. Postal Service on November 24, 1978, as part of the long-running “Americana” definitive series (1975–1981). The Americana Series celebrated fundamental American ideals—such as liberty, justice, freedom, and independence—through symbolic designs paired with powerful inscriptions. The 16¢ "Statue of Liberty" issue specifically honored the nation’s enduring commitment to freedom and enlightenment, using one of the most iconic symbols in American history to express those themes.

The series as a whole reflected a 1970s-era return to civic and moral themes in American stamp design—less focused on specific events or individuals, and more on enduring national values expressed through visual metaphor.

The Statue of Liberty was a fitting centerpiece for this concept. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886, the statue had come to embody both freedom and opportunity, standing as a beacon of welcome to immigrants and as an emblem of enlightenment for the world.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The 1978 16¢ “Statue of Liberty” stamp from the "Americana" Series expresses the sacred balance between freedom, work, and divine illumination—the eternal truth that liberty is not passive, but a living flame sustained by purpose and effort.

In the broader context of the Americana Series, each stamp carried a moral or philosophical ideal; the Statue of Liberty issue is its heart of illumination. It embodies the belief that freedom is both a right and a responsibility—a sacred trust that must be continually nurtured through work, gratitude, and justice. Spiritually, it reminds us that liberty without wisdom leads to chaos, and labor without meaning leads to emptiness. Only when the two are united—freedom guided by virtue, labor inspired by light—does true prosperity, both material and spiritual, arise.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
