At the time of its completion, the Verrazano-Narrows was the longest suspension bridge in the world, a symbol of postwar American optimism, innovation, and the enduring human drive to connect and create.

The bridge, named for Giovanni da Verrazzano, the 16th-century Italian explorer believed to be the first European to enter New York Harbor (in 1524), was designed by the renowned engineer Othmar H. Ammann and architect Cass Gilbert, who also designed the U.S. Supreme Court Building. Construction began in August 1959 and was completed five years later under the direction of the Port of New York Authority (now the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey).
