In this mixed-media artwork, I’ve created a painterly rendition of Kansas inspired by the state’s nature-derived symbols. Here, impasto applications of white paint intermix with hints of yellow and blue-green, a nod to the yellow and white feathers of the western meadowlark, the state bird; the yellow petals of the sunflower, the state flower; and the bluish-green leaves of little bluestem, the state grass. Completing the piece is a lightly textured, green ground, a subtle reference to the green leaves of the cottonwood, the state tree.
