DIY Valentine's Day Mailbox

T his Valentine's Day, craft a homemade mailbox with your kiddos to hold their cards, candy, trinkets, and other Valentine's Day treats and treasures.

SUPPLIES

  • Felt
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Craft knife
  • Tacky glue
  • Wide ribbon (About 1 yard, same width as cereal box)
  • Narrower ribbon (about 1.5 yards)
  • Cereal box

Please use caution when crafting with children. Sharp tools should be used by adults only.

STEP ONE

Cut the top off of a cereal box so that it stands about 6 inches tall. Set aside the excess cardboard.

STEP TWO

Cut the felt to the same width as the box. Next, glue it to the front, bottom, and back of the box, making sure to leave enough overhang to form the flap.

STEP THREE

Glue each end of the wide ribbon to the sides of the box, forming the strap.

STEP FOUR

Cut out two heart shapes from leftover cardboard. Add two narrow, rectangular slits using a craft knife as shown.

STEP FIVE

Paint the heart cutouts and let dry.

STEP SIX

Cut the length of narrower ribbon in half. Thread one end of the ribbon through one of the hearts and secure with glue on the reverse side as shown. Repeat with the second heart.

STEP SEVEN

Cut rounded corners on the front flap if desired.

STEP EIGHT

Glue the ribbons around the bag as shown, positioning each heart at the bottom and leaving excess ribbon hanging over the flap.

STEP NINE

Open the bag and cut a slit in the top of the bag with a craft knife, making sure to avoid the ribbons on the reverse side.

STEP TEN

Thread the excess ribbon through each of the hearts to “buckle” the back shut.
