“ Shibui” is a Japanese word that describes a simple, subdued and unadorned minimalist aesthetic. It is connected to the idea of wabi-sabi, which celebrates the imperfect and transitory nature of objects. The seven key components of shibui design are simplicity, modesty, silence, naturalness, everydayness, and imperfection: shibui is never complicated or contrived. Shibui 2 conveys an unassuming, quiet feeling and a sense of understated elegance. The works capture the play of light falling on a multifaceted hued surface, evoking landscape, sky and water.

    about the artist

    byJenny Phillips

    San Francisco, CA

Drawn to quietness, subtlety and understatement, I strive to evoke the mood, luminosity and texture of space, light and organic form. My work is about feeling, rather than ideology or narrative. I primarily use paper, wax, watercolor, India ink and acrylic washes, borrowing techniques from printmaking (dry point, chine collé) and combining materials in new and unexpected ways. I seek to balance simplicity of expression with rich sensory qualities.
