THE HISTORY OF FOIL PRESS. WHAT IS IT?
The origins of foil stamping date back to the twelfth century when a select number of Bible covers were adorned with gold leaf. This type of printing was very expensive because printers used real gold. So, it was only reserved for special items like the covers of books and important manuscripts. Not only was the process expensive, but it was also extremely labor-intensive since every page needed to be hand-copied or reproduced through tedious wood printing methods.
Even after the printing press was invented and the speed of print was accelerated, the process of foil pressing was still time-consuming and only used for the most important documents. While gold was the main metal used, the technique of hot stamping silver was developed in the 1880s, and silver foil pressing began. Additionally, a new material was invented to create foils made out of metallic material and color that wasn’t actually gold. This material made the act of foil pressing much more affordable and available to the masses. This foil format is the most similar to what we use today. If you are confident in your design tastes, an easy way to narrow down our card options is to use our webpage filters. A great first question to ask yourself is how many photos you want to include in your foil-pressed save the date card. Consider different sizing options for your mailer. Our foil designs can be printed on our classic stationery sized at 5” x 7” or a smaller postcard, petite, or magnet version sized at 4.25” x 6”. Whatever sizing you prefer, understand that your design will still have the glow and shimmer you desire!
If looking for a truly luxurious design, consider one of our custom foil designs. These designs allow you to foil-press all of the text on your save the date, instead of having only certain aspects of your design printed in foil. With custom foil, we will create a custom foil plate with your names, dates, and any other information you would like foiled, and press it into your design. This option is the epitome of luxury and automatically adds effortless elegance to your first wedding mailer.
