STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: Released on September 19, 1995, in Encinitas, California, the 32-cent "Fall Garden Flowers: Dahlia" postage stamp is part of the USPS Garden Flowers series, a beloved botanical program highlighting familiar ornamental blooms found in American gardens throughout the seasons. T his stamp belongs to the Fall Garden Flowers subset of the Garden Flowers series. The series was created to showcase popular seasonal flowers that thrive in home landscapes, emphasizing both their visual appeal and their role in marking the rhythms of the year. Dahlias—known for their bold structure, saturated color, and long blooming season—were selected to represent the richness and vitality that linger in the garden as autumn approaches.

Designer Ethel Kessler’s clean, understated layout allows the flower to dominate the composition, while botanical artist Thomas R. Hipschen’s illustration captures the dahlia’s complexity with precision and expressive color. The stamp features a large, fully opened dahlia bloom, rendered in rich, warm tones that emphasize its layered, geometric petals. The petals radiate outward in tight, symmetrical rows, creating a sense of depth, movement, and architectural structure. Subtle shading enhances the dimensionality of the flower, while a soft, neutral background keeps the focus on the bloom itself. The overall effect is bold yet refined—evoking abundance, confidence, and the dramatic beauty of fall gardens in full display.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: The dahlia has a rich history, originating in Mexico and Guatemala and eventually becoming the national flower of Mexico. The Aztecs cultivated and ate the dahlia tubers as food and used the plant to treat epilepsy. They also used the dahlia's hollow stems as water pipes. Spanish conquistadors discovered the dahlia in the 16th century. The first official recordings of the dahlia were made by Spanish botanists in 1615. The flower was named "Dahlia" in 1791 by botanist Antonio José Cavanilles, after Anders Dahl, a Swedish botanist and student of Carl Linnaeus. The dahlia was introduced to Europe in 1789, and reached Great Britain in 1798. It became a favorite flower of Queen Victoria's court, and gained symbolic meaning associated with commitment and elegance. Before the discovery of insulin, diabetics used a substance called "Atlantic starch" extracted from dahlia tubers. Mexico declared the dahlia its national flower in 1963. It's also the official flower of Seattle and San Francisco.

Dahlias can vary in size, with dwarf varieties suitable for flower beds, and giant varieties that can grow over 6 meters tall. The flower heads can reach 35 centimeters in diameter. While there are no true blue or black dahlia varieties, there are many near-blue and dark red and purple varieties.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Dahlias bloom boldly late in the season, when many other flowers fade, making them enduring symbols of standing fully in one’s power even as circumstances shift. Spiritually, the dahlia’s intricate, layered petals represent the many dimensions of the self—creative, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual—held together in balance. This complexity speaks to personal growth earned through experience, suggesting that depth and beauty often emerge from perseverance rather than ease. The flower’s strong geometric structure conveys stability and integrity, reinforcing themes of self-respect and grounded confidence.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: Part of the Garden Flowers series, the Fall Garden Flowers postage stamps were released on September 19, 1995 at the Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas, California. The selected fall blooms were the aster, chrysanthemum, dahlia, hydrangea, and the rudbeckia. The Garden Flowers series is a long-running floral theme issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS), created to celebrate the beauty, familiarity, and emotional resonance of flowers commonly found in American gardens. Spanning multiple issues and denominations from the late 20th century into the early 21st century, the series reflects USPS’s enduring commitment to botanical art as a bridge between fine design and everyday life. The Garden Flowers series emerged from USPS’s broader effort to feature accessible, nature-based subjects that would appeal to a wide audience. Rather than spotlighting rare or exotic blooms, the series focuses on beloved garden staples—flowers people recognize from backyards, bouquets, and seasonal displays.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
