STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: Part of the Herbs Series, this 29-cent self-adhesive postage stamp was first issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on April 7, 2011, in New York, New York. This series was conceived to highlight common culinary herbs that are deeply rooted in American kitchens and global food traditions, presented with clarity and elegance suitable for everyday correspondence. Though foxglove is best known for its medicinal associations rather than culinary use, its inclusion reflects the broader historical meaning of “herbs” as plants of healing and tradition.

The stamp features a tall foxglove stem in bloom, rendered in soft pinks, purples, and greens against a light, neutral uncluttered background. The characteristic bell-shaped flowers cascade along the stem, with fine linework and gentle shading that highlight their delicate structure. The vertical composition emphasizes the plant’s natural elegance and height, while the restrained color palette lends the design a calm, refined quality typical of the Herbs Series.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Foxgloves (digitalis purpurea) are herbaceous plants with large leaves and tall spikes of tube-shaped flowers. They are native to Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Canary Islands. Foxglove flowers grow in spikes on tall, upright stems. All parts of the plant are poisonous and should not be consumed. The chemicals in foxglove can increase the strength of heart muscle contractions, change heart rate, and increase heart blood output. Chemicals derived from foxglove are used to make the modern prescription drug, digoxin.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Foxglove flowers hold many symbolic meanings, including healing, magic, and duality. In Celtic folklore, foxgloves are associated with fairies and magic and are believed to attract fairies to gardens. In Scandinavian folklore, fairies taught foxes to ring foxglove bells to warn each other of hunters.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Herbs Series was first issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on April 7, 2011, in New York, New York. These self-adhesive stamps were designed by Phil Jordan of Falls Church, Virginia. The five stamps in this series feature various flowering herbs used for fragrance, flavoring, medicine, and/or decoration. Artist Teresa Fasolino of New York, New York, created the original oil paintings for each stamp in the series. Each stamp evokes a vintage-style and depicts a particular species in bloom, as well as a typical leaf and flower or seed capsule. The species featured on these elegant stamps are Origanum vulgare (oregano), Linum perenne (flax), Digitalis purpurea (foxglove), Lavandula angustifolio (lavender), and Salvia officinalis (sage), however, only the common names for these plants appear on the stamps. 29-cents was the postcard rate the year these stamps were released.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use an adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates on the USPS website.

PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
