STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of postage stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. The stamp features the distinctive Yellow Lady’s Slipper (Cypripedium calceolus var. pubescens), a rare and admired native orchid. The design presents the flower’s unusual form, highlighting the inflated golden-yellow pouch-shaped petal that resembles a slipper. Above the pouch, narrow reddish-brown sepals and twisted petals arch outward, while broad green leaves rise along the stem. The clean background emphasizes the orchid’s striking structure and vivid color contrast.

FLOWER INFORMATION: Yellow Lady’s Slipper is a perennial orchid native to moist woodlands and shaded forests of North America. The plant typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall and produces one or two blossoms per stem in late spring to early summer. The flower’s most recognizable feature is the large yellow pouch, which functions as a trap-like structure guiding pollinators through the flower’s reproductive parts. The surrounding sepals and petals are slender and often brownish or greenish in tone, creating a dramatic contrast with the bright pouch. Broad, pleated leaves grow along the stem, adding to the plant’s distinctive appearance.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, the Yellow Lady’s Slipper symbolizes rarity, mystery, and the protection of hidden beauty. Its unusual shape and limited natural habitats have long made it a symbol of preciousness and delicate balance within nature. The slipper-like form suggests safe passage or guidance, while the golden color is associated with wisdom, illumination, and prosperity.

Historically, Lady’s Slipper orchids have fascinated botanists and naturalists for centuries because of their complex pollination strategies and specialized ecological relationships. Indigenous peoples recognized certain species for medicinal and cultural uses, often respecting the plant for its rarity and distinctive form. Today the flower is considered sensitive and protected in many regions due to habitat loss. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, the Yellow Lady’s Slipper stands as a graceful tribute to the intricate beauty of native orchids and the importance of preserving fragile wildflower ecosystems.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
