STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp features Sweet White Violet (Viola blanda), a delicate woodland wildflower native to eastern North America. The design presents a close-up view of the flower’s soft white petals, each blossom composed of five gently rounded petals with subtle purple veining that guides pollinators toward the center. Slender green stems and heart-shaped leaves surround the bloom, while the clean, light background emphasizes the flower’s purity and graceful form.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Sweet White Violet is a small perennial plant that typically grows only 2 to 6 inches tall in moist woodlands, forest edges, and shaded meadows. The flowers bloom in early spring, often appearing soon after the snow melts. Each blossom has five petals arranged asymmetrically, with the lower petal slightly larger and often marked with faint purple lines. The plant’s heart-shaped leaves grow close to the ground, forming low clusters beneath the blossoms. As its name suggests, the flower sometimes carries a faint sweet fragrance, adding to its charm.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, the Sweet White Violet symbolizes humility, purity, and quiet devotion. Because the flower grows low to the ground and blooms modestly beneath larger plants, it has long been associated with humility and gentle strength. The white coloration represents innocence, clarity, and spiritual renewal, while the delicate purple veins suggest wisdom and subtle insight.
Historically, violets have been cherished for centuries in poetry, folklore, and herbal traditions. In many cultures they were associated with faithfulness and modest beauty. Native species such as the Sweet White Violet also played ecological roles as early nectar sources for pollinators in spring forests. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, this graceful flower stands as a symbol of quiet resilience and understated beauty—an elegant tribute to the subtle wonders of America’s woodland wildflowers.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
