STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1992 29-cent “Desert Five Spot” postage stamp was issued by the United States Postal Service as part of its vibrant American Wildflower series, a program celebrating the diversity and natural beauty of native U.S. flora. Released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, the stamp honored the delicate desert bloom Eremalche rotundifolia, a spring wildflower native to the arid regions of the Southwest. The stamp's design features the Desert Five Spot (Eremalche rotundifolia) in close-up: five softly rounded petals in pale pink-lavender tones, each marked with a distinctive deep maroon “spot” near the base—an eye-catching signature that gives the flower its common name. Set against a light, uncluttered background, the composition emphasizes the bloom’s delicate texture and high-contrast patterning, making it both visually striking on mail and especially appealing to collectors of wildflower and Southwest-themed U.S. issues.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: The Desert Five Spot (Eremalche rotundifolia) is a striking spring-blooming wildflower native to the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts of the American Southwest. Despite growing in arid, sandy soils, it produces one of the most visually dramatic blossoms found in desert landscapes. The flower typically features five broad, rounded petals forming a shallow cup shape. The petals are usually soft pink to pale lavender, sometimes fading toward white at the edges. What makes the plant instantly recognizable are the five deep maroon to crimson blotches located at the base of each petal—one spot per petal—creating a bold, high-contrast pattern against the lighter background. These dark “spots” function as nectar guides, attracting pollinators such as native bees.

The center of the flower contains a cluster of fine stamens, often pale yellow to cream in color, adding subtle textural detail. The plant itself grows low to the ground, typically reaching 4 to 12 inches in height, with rounded, slightly lobed leaves that are gray-green and softly textured. Blooming after seasonal rains, the Desert Five Spot often appears in clusters, creating patches of color across otherwise muted desert terrain. Its delicate petals and vivid markings make it one of the most photogenic and botanically distinctive wildflowers of the Southwest—an emblem of beauty emerging from harsh, sun-baked environments.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Native to some of the harshest desert environments in North America, the flower blooms briefly after seasonal rains—making it a powerful symbol of renewal following hardship and life emerging where survival seems unlikely. The flower’s sudden appearance after rain reinforces its symbolism of hope, timing, and divine orchestration. It does not bloom constantly; it blooms when conditions align. Spiritually, this reflects the belief that growth and expression unfold in their proper season—sometimes unseen for long periods, yet always present in potential.

Its most distinctive feature—the five deep crimson spots at the base of each pale petal—gives rise to layered symbolic meaning. The number five is often associated spiritually with balance, the human experience, and the union of the physical and spiritual realms (five senses, five elements in some traditions). The dark spots resting at the heart of soft pink petals can be interpreted as wounds transformed into beauty, or marks of identity that are not flaws but defining strengths. In this way, the Desert Five Spot embodies the idea that what appears as imperfection may actually be sacred signature.

Delicate yet bold, soft yet dramatically marked, the Desert Five Spot represents gentle strength. It invites contemplation of resilience without hardness, identity without apology, and beauty that does not deny struggle but transforms it. In desert spirituality especially, it stands as a reminder that even in landscapes defined by scarcity, there is hidden abundance waiting for the right moment to reveal itself.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
