STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 29c Large-flowered Trillium postage stamp was part of the 1992 “American Wildflower" commemorative series, a pane of 50 different stamps that celebrated endemic American flora. Its official first day of issue was July 24, 1992, with the stamp's debut held in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 International Floral and Garden Exposition. The stamp features a watercolor painting of the Large-flowered Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum), a species native to the eastern U.S. and the state wildflower of Ohio, with the artwork for the entire series created by Alaskan artist Karen Mallary.

FLOWER INFORMATION: The Large-flowered Trillium, also known as the Great White Trillium or Wake Robin, is a native perennial wildflower from the rich woodlands of eastern North America. The plant is particularly recognizable for its parts all appearing in threes, a characteristic that gives the genus its name. The single, striking flower is held on a short stalk above the leaves and blooms in early to mid-spring (April–May). It features three large, white, wavy-edged petals that are typically 2.5 to 3.5 inches across and surround a center of six yellow stamens. As the flower ages, the petals gracefully turn a soft, rosy pink. As a spring ephemeral, the Large-flowered Trillium grows best in partial to full shade, especially in the deep, rich, and moist soils of deciduous forests and thickets.

The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition.
