STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 29c Tickseed postage stamp was a commemorative issue from the 1992 “American Wildflower" series. Released in Columbus, Ohio, on July 24, 1992, the stamp celebrated endemic American flora and coincided with the AmeriFlora '92 International Floral and Garden Exposition. The design, a watercolor painting of the Tickseed flower, was created by Alaskan artist Karen Mallary, who illustrated the entire 50-stamp pane.

FLOWER INFORMATION: The Tickseed is a native perennial wildflower from the genus Coreopsis that is also known as "Coreopsis" or "Lanceleaf Coreopsis". The plant features large, showy, solitary flowers that resemble daisies, with each blossom measuring 1 to 2 inches across. The flowers have eight yellow, toothed petals (ray florets) arranged around a flat, yellow central disk. The petals often have sharply jagged ends, giving the blooms a unique, sculpted look. The name "Tickseed" comes from the appearance of its seeds (achenes), which resemble small bugs or ticks. The scientific genus name Coreopsis also reflects this, derived from the Greek words koris ("bug") and opsis ("like"). Tickseed typically grows in clumps up to two feet tall and can be found in prairies, glades, fields, and along roadsides.

Native American tribes historically used the flower in ceremonies, believing it would bring happiness and positive energy to those around it. STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".
