STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 29c Marsh Marigold postage stamp was part of the 1992 “American Wildflower" commemorative series, a pane of 50 different stamps celebrating native American flora. Its official first day of issue was July 24, 1992, with the stamp's debut held in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 International Floral and Garden Exposition. The stamp features a watercolor painting of the Marsh Marigold flower (Caltha palustris), also known as "kingcup," which is native to marshes and wet woodlands in the northeastern U.S.. Alaskan artist Karen Mallary created the artwork for the entire series and also selected the 50 wildflowers to be featured.

FLOWER INFORMATION: The Marsh Marigold is a perennial wildflower from the buttercup family recognized by its glossy green leaves and bright, showy yellow flowers that appear in early spring. The plant's low-growing, mounding habit can form impressive swaths of color in wet environments like marshes and streams. The large, cup-shaped flowers are a brilliant, shiny yellow and typically measure 1–2 inches across. What appear to be petals are actually five to nine petal-like sepals that surround a central ring of numerous yellow stamens.

Its vibrant, golden-yellow flowers are often seen as miniature representations of the sun, bringing vitality, optimism, and positive energy to wet, marshy landscapes.
