STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp's design features Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), a small woodland plant closely related to the flowering dogwood. The stamp presents the flower in close-up, showing four white petal-like bracts arranged in a symmetrical cross around a tight cluster of tiny greenish blossoms at the center. Deep green leaves radiate beneath the bloom, creating a strong contrast that highlights the flower’s bright white form against a light, uncluttered background.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Bunchberry is a low-growing perennial found in cool northern forests across North America. Typically only 4 to 8 inches tall, the plant forms carpets of glossy green leaves in shaded woodland environments. The “flower” is actually composed of four large white bracts that surround a compact cluster of true flowers in the center. Later in the season, the plant produces bright red berries grouped in a tight bunch, which gives the plant its common name. The blossoms appear in late spring and early summer, bringing a delicate brightness to forest floors.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, Bunchberry symbolizes unity, quiet strength, and interconnectedness. The cross-like arrangement of its white bracts represents harmony and balance, while its clustered central flowers suggest community and cooperation. Because the plant grows in colonies that spread gently across woodland floors, it reflects the idea that strength can arise from collective presence rather than individual prominence.

Historically, Bunchberry has long been part of northern forest ecosystems and cultural traditions. Indigenous peoples recognized the plant both as a food source—its berries being edible though mild—and as a component of the natural landscape that sustained wildlife. Botanically, it is also famous for having one of the fastest-moving plant mechanisms in nature: its flowers release pollen explosively when triggered, an adaptation that enhances pollination. As captured on the 1992 29¢ stamp, Bunchberry stands as a graceful tribute to the quiet beauty of North America’s forest understory and the intricate relationships that sustain natural ecosystems.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
