STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp features Round-Lobed Hepatica (Hepatica americana), one of the earliest wildflowers to bloom in North American woodlands. The design presents a close-up of the delicate flower with soft lavender-blue petals radiating around a central cluster of pale stamens. Beneath the bloom are the plant’s distinctive three-lobed leaves, which give the species its common name. The clean, light background allows the cool blue tones of the blossom and the textured green foliage to stand out clearly, highlighting the flower’s refined symmetry and early-spring freshness.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Round-Lobed Hepatica is a small perennial wildflower typically found in deciduous forests across eastern and central North America. The plant usually grows only 4 to 8 inches tall and blooms very early in the spring, sometimes even pushing through melting snow. The flowers may range in color from pale blue and lavender to white or soft pink, each blossom composed of 6 to 12 petal-like sepals surrounding a cluster of delicate stamens. The leaves are leathery and three-lobed, remaining green through much of the year. Because the plant blooms so early, it is often considered one of the first signs of the changing seasons in woodland environments.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, Round-Lobed Hepatica symbolizes renewal, hope, and awakening. Its early appearance after winter reflects the return of life and the promise of new beginnings. The soft blue coloration is often associated with serenity, trust, and spiritual clarity, while the flower’s delicate form suggests quiet resilience and perseverance.
Historically, Hepatica held significance in traditional herbal practices. In early European and American folk medicine, the plant was believed to support liver health because the three-lobed leaves resembled the shape of the liver—a belief influenced by the historical “Doctrine of Signatures,” which held that a plant’s appearance indicated its medicinal use. Although modern science has revised these interpretations, the plant remains culturally associated with healing and renewal. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, Round-Lobed Hepatica stands as a graceful symbol of spring’s arrival and the enduring cycles of growth and restoration found in nature.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
