STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of postage stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp features Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium), a tall and striking wildflower often seen across northern forests and mountain landscapes. The design presents a vertical stem lined with several open blossoms in brilliant magenta-pink tones, each flower composed of four delicate petals surrounding a pale center with long, slender stamens. Narrow lance-shaped leaves extend along the stem, while the light background highlights the bright blossoms and graceful upright form of the plant.
FLOWER INFORMATION: Fireweed is a perennial wildflower that commonly grows in disturbed areas such as forest clearings, mountain slopes, and fields that have experienced fire or other environmental changes. The plant can grow from 2 to 6 feet tall and produces numerous blossoms arranged along the upper portion of the stem. The flowers are typically bright pink to magenta with four petals, forming a loose spike that blooms gradually from the bottom upward. After flowering, the plant develops long seed pods filled with silky hairs that help disperse seeds by wind. Its ability to quickly colonize burned landscapes gives the plant its common name.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, Fireweed symbolizes renewal, resilience, and rebirth after hardship. Because it is often one of the first plants to appear after wildfires, it represents hope emerging from destruction and the power of nature to regenerate. The vivid magenta blossoms convey vitality and emotional strength, reinforcing themes of perseverance and transformation.
Historically, Fireweed has been valued in many northern cultures and by Indigenous peoples of North America. Young shoots and leaves were sometimes used as food, and the plant has been used in traditional herbal preparations. It also plays an important ecological role by stabilizing soil and supporting pollinators in recovering ecosystems. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, Fireweed stands as a powerful symbol of renewal and the remarkable ability of natural landscapes to heal and flourish again.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
