STAMP HISTORY: The 1953 3¢ “New York City” postage stamp was issued by the U.S. Post Office Department on July 26, 1953, to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of New York City in 1653. The stamp honored the transformation of the small Dutch colonial settlement of New Amsterdam into one of the world’s great metropolitan centers—celebrating three centuries of civic growth, commerce, and cultural vitality.

The stamp’s design was created by Charles R. Chickering, one of the most prolific and respected U.S. stamp designers of the mid-20th century. The engraving, produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, features a panoramic view of Lower Manhattan as seen from across the East River.

The first-day ceremony took place in New York City—appropriately, the very city the stamp honored. Civic leaders, postal officials, and historians gathered to mark the tricentennial, which included yearlong celebrations throughout the five boroughs. The event emphasized New York’s evolution from a Dutch trading post on the southern tip of Manhattan into the commercial, financial, and cultural capital of the United States.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The 1953 3¢ “New York City Tricentennial” postage stamp captures the sacred essence of unity, progress, and the shared human striving toward light.

The stamp’s carmine rose hue adds another layer of meaning. Red, the color of vitality, courage, and love, here glows softly rather than boldly—expressing the warmth of shared human purpose. It embodies the pulse of the city, the lifeblood of millions working together in the ceaseless rhythm of creation. Spiritually, this color reflects the divine fire within humanity, the creative energy that transforms the material world into a reflection of the spirit.

The three centuries celebrated by the stamp echo a trinity of time—past, present, and future—suggesting the continuity of divine purpose through human history. From its humble beginnings as New Amsterdam to its status as a world metropolis, New York’s growth mirrors the spiritual evolution of the soul: expanding from simplicity into awareness, from isolation into communion.

Ultimately, the 1953 New York City stamp is a meditation on connection as sacred work. It reminds us that every bridge built, every skyline raised, every community formed is an act of faith in the divine potential of humanity. It invites us to see the city not just as a place of commerce or power, but as a living temple of cooperation—a symbol of what the human spirit can build when it aspires toward unity, guided by the light of creation.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
