STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of postage stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp features the Showy Evening Primrose (Oenothera speciosa), depicted in a close-up composition that highlights its broad, soft pink petals surrounding a cluster of bright yellow stamens. The petals display subtle darker pink veins radiating from the center, while slender green stems and leaves frame the bloom. The clean background emphasizes the flower’s luminous coloration and open, welcoming form.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Showy Evening Primrose is a perennial wildflower native to prairies, meadows, and open fields across much of the central and southern United States. The plant typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall and produces large, delicate blossoms measuring up to two inches across. Each flower has four wide petals, usually pale pink fading toward white near the edges, with darker pink veining and a bright yellow center. True to its name, the blossoms often open in the evening or early morning and may fade as the day progresses. The plant spreads easily and can form colorful patches across grassy landscapes.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, the Showy Evening Primrose symbolizes renewal, quiet transformation, and the beauty of life’s transitions. Because the flowers open during twilight or early morning, they represent the liminal moments between day and night—times often associated with reflection, intuition, and spiritual awakening. The soft pink coloration evokes compassion, gentleness, and emotional balance.
Historically, evening primrose species have been valued for both ecological and cultural reasons. Indigenous peoples used various parts of the plant for food and medicinal purposes, while its seeds later became known for producing evening primrose oil, valued for its nutritional properties. The flower’s ability to bloom abundantly in open prairies made it a familiar and beloved feature of North American landscapes. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, the Showy Evening Primrose stands as a graceful emblem of resilience, renewal, and the subtle beauty of America’s native grasslands.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use an adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates on the USPS website.
PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
