STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of postage stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp features Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens), a climbing vine known for its brilliant tubular blossoms. The design presents a cluster of elongated red-orange flowers arranged at the tip of a slender stem, with their flared yellow interiors visible at the openings. Blue-green oval leaves frame the blooms, while the clean background emphasizes the striking color contrast and graceful structure of the plant.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Trumpet Honeysuckle is a perennial climbing vine native to the eastern United States. The plant can grow several feet long, often twining through shrubs and fences or climbing along woodland edges. Its blossoms are long, narrow tubes colored bright red to coral, with yellow interiors that guide pollinators toward nectar. The flowers bloom in late spring and summer and are particularly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. The plant’s smooth, bluish-green leaves grow opposite one another along the vine, sometimes forming pairs that appear fused around the stem.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, Trumpet Honeysuckle symbolizes vitality, attraction, and joyful connection. Its vivid red blossoms represent passion and life energy, while the trumpet-shaped flowers suggest a call or invitation—often interpreted as a symbol of communication or the sharing of beauty. Because the plant draws hummingbirds and pollinators, it also represents the idea of welcoming life and fostering harmony within one’s environment.
Historically, native honeysuckle species such as Trumpet Honeysuckle have long been appreciated for their ornamental beauty and ecological value. Unlike some invasive honeysuckle varieties introduced later, this native vine plays an important role in supporting wildlife and maintaining balanced ecosystems. Early naturalists and gardeners valued it for its brilliant color and ability to brighten woodland edges and gardens. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, Trumpet Honeysuckle stands as a vivid tribute to the vibrant life and ecological richness of America’s native flowering vines.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
