STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp features Wild Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), a graceful woodland wildflower native to much of eastern and central North America. The design presents the plant’s distinctive nodding blossoms with bright red outer sepals and yellow inner petals that extend into long, curved nectar spurs. Slender green stems and delicate lobed leaves frame the flowers, while the clean background emphasizes the unique structure and vibrant coloration of the bloom.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Wild Columbine is a perennial wildflower that grows in rocky woodlands, forest edges, and open slopes. The plant typically reaches 1 to 3 feet in height and produces several dangling blossoms in late spring. Each flower is easily recognized by its red and yellow coloration and backward-curving spurs, which store nectar and attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies. The finely divided leaves add a soft, airy texture to the plant, complementing the delicate, lantern-like blossoms.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, Wild Columbine symbolizes freedom, inspiration, and graceful independence. The flower’s distinctive spurred shape and downward-facing blossoms suggest movement and fluidity, often interpreted as a sign of creative expression and spiritual openness. Its bright red and yellow colors evoke vitality and warmth, representing the harmonious balance of energy and joy.
Historically, Wild Columbine has been admired in North American landscapes for centuries and is often associated with natural beauty in woodland environments. Indigenous peoples recognized the plant for various traditional uses, and its striking appearance made it a favorite subject among early naturalists and botanical illustrators. In many regions, it has also been adopted as a symbol of the rugged beauty of native landscapes. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, Wild Columbine stands as a vibrant tribute to the elegance and diversity of America’s wildflower heritage.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
PROCESSING & SHIPPING: Orders are typically processed and shipped within 1-3 business days of placing your order. All orders are shipped from California — please allow additional time for transit.
