Life is never as simple as just black and white. It's complicated. As I've attempted to navigate all facets of life, from relationships, lifestyle, travel and books, there is never just one clear answer as we seek to figure out the meaning of that around us. Black and White are opposite but there are subtleties and preferences in-between and everything else is in the middle. That is how I make my paintings because that is how life is lived. Undercoats may include color, mixed media, collage, and various shades of black, gray, white, and beige. Layers of depth and breadth, understanding and curiosity, failure and success make up a painting and snippets of life.

    about the artist

    byJan McCarthy

    Los Angeles, CA

I make art to autograph moments, the fleeting emotions and undefinable feelings that can only be expressed in imperfect swipes, lines, or ripped pieces of paper. My unique marks and gestures connect and share flashpoints of time that slip away. This process is essential as a personal statement, a reclaiming of my point of view, of being a woman, of aging. I’ve never allowed how the world might aim to herd the masses as a reason to follow the pack. This constant resistance feels vital to me.
