Torn Tides 2, the second piece in a diptych, was inspired by the way the ocean is always in a state of flux. I was drawn to the movement of waves and currents not as a single image, but as something felt in fragments—shifting, pulling, and breaking apart before coming back together. Working with hand-painted, torn paper allowed the process to echo the subject: edges are imperfect, surfaces hold texture, and each tear becomes a quiet record of touch and time. This reflects the tension between force and gentleness that exists in water and in ourselves. The two panels of the diptych speak to one another like neighboring currents, shaped by motion rather than control. In embracing imperfection and irregularity, I wanted the work to feel human—vulnerable and in flux just like us. Torn Tides 1 and Torn Tides 2 were designed as a diptych, but also work as individual statement artworks.
