Brianna & Emmalie in Charlottesville, Virginia

The Couple

For their summertime nuptials, Brianna Adams and Emmalie Spina envisioned a celebration that was elegant, ethereal, and full of laughter. And on June 7, 2018, the longtime couple exchanged marriage vows amid the rolling green hills of Virginia’s wine country, with a modern, greenery-covered wooden structure as their backdrop. As the sun began to set, the party moved to the courtyard for dinner and dancing, before the newlyweds made their getaway on a cream-colored Vespa. Here, Brianna shares their wedding story.

Their Story

How They Met

A friend was out at a bar and met Emmalie in passing. After chatting, my friend said, “Hey, I know someone you should meet—here’s her phone number.” Emmalie immediately texted me, even though she was charging her phone behind the bar! We’ve been texting every day ever since.

The Proposal

Emmalie brought me to Pippin Hill Farm in Charlottesville, a place I absolutely love. We walked out onto the veranda and I saw a table set up with candles and champagne. I looked at Emmalie and her hands were in her pockets—a sure sign she was nervous. I turned and spotted my friend Merideth also there, holding her camera, and then looked back at Emmalie. She was down on one knee, holding her grandmother’s wedding ring. The rest is a blur. All I remember was that she asked me to marry her and I said “Yes!”

Wedding venue

We both fell in love with the Grand Hall at Trump Winery for the views and atmosphere. There’s a large, open building with a stone courtyard and fountain, plus views overlooking the entire vineyard. It’s very classy and airy, and checked all of the boxes for us.

Their aesthetic

We wanted our wedding to feel very ethereal—the idea sort of came to us both and we flew with it.

Wedding-day looks

Mywony Bridal designed my dress, which was made of chiffon and had a low back. Emmalie got her ladysuit from Men’s Wearhouse.

Wedding invitation

Our invitation was the perfect hint at the overall vibe and feel of our special day.

Dress code

Our dress code was “dressy”—a wedding is an excuse to dress up, so do it!

Vow exchange

We loved the amazing triangle-shaped ceremony backdrop our florist created.

The reception

The weather was perfect and guests dined outside in the courtyard and around the fountain. Dinner tables were decorated with blue crystal glasses and gauzy, dusty-blue table runners and napkins.

First dance

Our first dance was in the courtyard—after many failed attempts during practice, Emmalie dipped me and nailed it when it counted!

The getaway

Instead of a getaway car, we had a getaway Vespa!

Wedding advice

It’s so easy to stray from your budget, so it’s important to spend money where it matters the most to you and your partner. Honestly, you will go over budget and you need to be realistic about it. Also, make a vision board, then reach out to vendors that you really want to be a part of your day. Then, let them do their thing—you reached out to them for a reason, so sit back and watch the magic happen.
